The Guru on Lapping Scope Rings

GREETINGS YA’LL FROM “CAMP GURU”, IN SEALY, TX. TEMPERATURES ARE ALREADY IN THE TRIPLE-DIGITS !!!!!!

IF YOU HAVE EVER TRIED TO BORE-SIGHT A RIFLE @ 25 YDS. & THE “POSITIVE VERTICAL ADJUSTMENT” (ABOVE THE HORIZONTAL LINE) HAS REACHED IT’S MAX RANGE OF ADJUSTMENT, DON’T HAVE A “HISSY-FIT”, START CUSSING AND GENERALLY CAUSING A SCENE AT THE LOCAL SHOOTING RANGE !!!! THE REASON IS QUITE SIMPLE & THE REQUIRED CORRECTIVE ACTION IS QUITE EASILY ACCOMPLISHED. SO KEEP READING………………………………….

CAUSE:  THE INSIDE SURFACE OF THE LOWER FRONT RING HALF, IS TOO HIGH. INVERSELY, THE REAR RING IS SLIGHTLY LOWER. KEEP IN MIND, I AM REFERRING TO ONLY THOUSANDTHS OF AN INCH (.000″) DIFFERENCE !!!! IN THE SIMPLEST OF TERMS, THE INSIDE SURFACE OF BOTH RING HALVES, WERE NOT “LEVEL” TO EACH OTHER.

IN THIS PARTICULAR INSTANCE, THE HEIGHT DIFFERENCE WAS ONLY .007″ !!!!!!!—“MR. GURU, THAT DOES NOT SOUND LIKE VERY MUCH ???”—“REMEMBER WHAT I HAVE ALREADY TAUGHT YOU. .000″ AT THE RIFLE = 1.000″ OF ERROR @ 100 YDS. SO AT 100 YDS. THE VERTICAL ADJUSTMENT RANGE WAS PENALIZED A TOTAL OF 7 INCHES OF POSITIVE ADJUSTMENT….TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE !!!!”

REASON: BOTH RINGS SHOULD HAVE BEEN MACHINE “REAMED”, IN PAIRS @ THE SAME TIME, INSTEAD OF SEPARATELY !!!!! THESE ORIGINAL 1965 “DENVER, CO. REDFIELD” RINGS HAD QC ISSUES, WHICH WERE WELL KNOWN TO MOST GUNSMITHS OF THE TIME. HOWEVER, THIS OPTICAL SYSTEM WAS INSTALLED BY THE OWNER & NOT A TRAINED GUNSMITH WHO MOST LIKELY WOULD HAVE CAUGHT THIS ISSUE DURING INSTALLATION.

CORRECTIVE ACTION:  LAPPING THE INSIDE OF THE RINGS WITH A 1″ / 30 MM. STEEL LAPPING BAR & LAPPING COMPOUND, WILL SOLVE THE PROBLEM. LAP UNTIL THE INSIDE LOWER HALF OF BOTH RINGS, SHOW AT LEAST 80-90% OF THEIR GRIPPING SURFACES HAVE BEEN SMOOTHED OUT. CLEAN THOROUGHLY TO REMOVE LAPPING COMPOUND & POLISH THE FRESHLY LAPPED SURFACES WITH A DAB OF NON-ABRASIVE METAL POLISH. BUFF OFF & THEN INSTALL THE SCOPE !!!!!!!

ANY QUESTIONS FROM THE READERS ???? IF YOU DO, SEND THEM TO THE CH. EDITOR & HE WILL FORWARD TO ME !!!!!!!!!
